Abstract

Broadband and ubiquity are factors that foster the development of modern Internet. IP connectivity, everywhere and time demands wireless solutions of high scalability and interoperability. Standard IEEE 802.16, promoted as WiMax, shows innovative characteristics. Based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing, WiMax offers telecom operators a new way of facing nowadays challenges. This paper briefly describes the evolution of the standard, its market potentiality, its technical aspects and its status compared to other access technologies.
