ENUM and its Future Development

Abstract

Special attention is paid to IETF in the telecommunications sector and, particularly, within its standardization organizations. This allows the establishment of a correspondence between numbers E.164 — Public Telephone Numbers — and the Internet Domain Name System (DNS) through ENUM protocol facilitating a two-way interconnection between PSTN and networks based on Internet Protocol. The author analyzes this relation and mentions technical, operational and regulatory features. Emphasis on the integrity of national numbering plans is made.
