The IP Backbone for Telephone Services

Abstract

In recent years, new opportunities have emerged for telecommunication carriers due to the great growth of data traffic, the development of Internet, broadband and related services. This article describes the main reasons that led to the performance of National Backbone (BBN) project at Telecom Italia, the decisions made on technology and architecture issues, as well as the solutions adopted in the network equipment environment. It also describes the phases developed to implement this network platform, the behaviour of other carriers regarding this idea of Telecom Italia and its innovation on the subject.
