ATM and Frame Relay: Transfer Modes of Communication Networks

Abstract

The current trend to acquire the most recent equipments and services offered in the market, without taking into account the secondary effects mainly the economic ones, the advantages and drawback and the specific function to which it was created, makes the author to describe two of the most important transfer modes used in the communications networks: ATM and Frame Relay. Besides, they are fast packing technologies frequently used in the commercial environment as a base to build and interconnect communication networks of digital data. For this purpose, the author considered the advantages and drawback of each technology and the orientation in the moment of its creation, as well as the development in the last years to create a universal network and integrate all technologies.
