Voice transmission over data networks is, definitely, the future of communications at a global scale. It is based on a set of protocols for call signaling and control. The development of means to manage voice, video and data communications efficiently will bring about price, operation and business structure changes which will modify the nature of economy in the telecommunications market. These systems should count on a data switching and transmission infrastructure to achieve a flexible service for elements control. Open source telephone platform, Asterisk, is designed to interact with the existing software and hardware, achieving interconnection among the different signaling protocols, in a transparent way to the end user. This paper proposes some procedures for VoIP gateways design and implementation with main access lines to the Public Switching Telephone Network as well as configuration issues for call signaling standards interoperability.
