This paper presents some theoretical and experimental results that have been achieved during the execution of a telecommunications project developed by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at Las Villas University. The Project has helped to create a telecommunication infrastructure focused on educational and research purposes which links VoIP, wireless technology, mobile telephony and the PSTN at a small-scale. The first phase of the project has deployed a SIP network — using Asterisk — and a H.323 network — controlled by GNUGK —, both interconnected with the PSTN. The second phase will add wireless and mobile cellular technologies to explore telecommunications convergence.
