Abstract

Telecommunication networks has evolved rapidly leading to new development opportunities and challenges on the security of Critical Network Infrastructure (CNI), basically identified as a whole network or network elements that carry relevant information. This article refers to CNI concept, its trends for the 21st century, the segments it covers, as well as the increase of threats and vulnerabilities in number and severity which raise the need of preventive strategies to avoid potentially catastrophic events in society. The highly complexity of CNI security, the need for a global consideration on threats and ways to stimulate cooperative actions to approach this issue appropriately are also examined.
