Abstract

When planning, developing and dimensioning IP-based networks, it is essential to know the protocol basic concepts that support them. This article describes latest IP address protocols — IPv4 and IPv6 — and examines the concepts of address space and hierarchy address levels. Emphasis is made on mask and subnetworks concepts, including practical examples. Finally, definitions of security and mobility in IPv6 networks are introduced.
